SCHOOLS: Science Week Workshops with Super Paua

Monday 8th November, 2021 - 09:30 - Thursday 11th November, 2021 - 11:00

Riverbank Arts Centre and Super Paua present
Primary School Workshops for SCIENCE WEEK from 8-11 November

Choose from three very different workshops outlined below to explore science, storytelling, creativity and activism in your classroom. These workshops will be conducted via ZOOM by Mark Ball of Super Paua, who created The Lonsdale Project – a theatrical exploration of the life and work of world famous (and Newbridge-born!) scientist, Dr. Kathleen Lonsdale.

WORKSHOP#1: Stargazing & Storytelling

Themes: Creativity, Art/Science, Astronomy, Storytelling  Ages: 1st-6th Class

Time: 1.5 hours (can include 10 minute snack break).

Preparation (optional): Listen to the story Moonstone, by Aoife Meagher.

“I’m only supposed to come up to the attic on Saturday nights, because stargazing is a late night activity. Doesn’t matter these days. Can’t sleep at night. Can’t focus during the day. Whole neighbourhood is the same.”– Moonstone by Aoife Meagher, Super Paua Stories Series 1

Join us to explore astronomy and storytelling in this workshop inspired by Moonstone by Aoife Meagher. Moonstone is a story produced in the first series of Super Paua Stories, a podcast of short stories for children 5+.

In this workshop we will look at storytelling techniques and constellations to encourage children and young people to create their own stellar, stargazing-inspired stories.

WORKSHOP #2: ARTificial

Themes: Creativity, Art/Science, Artificial Intelligence   Ages: 5th and 6th Class
Time: 1.5 hours (can include 10 minute snack break).
Materials: Paper/pens

How do machines learn? Will AI (Artificial Intelligence) take over the world? How can I detect fake news?

Join us in this art and science workshop that explores AI, machine learning and fake news. Using practical, creative, and discussion based activities we explore with the young people the impacts that technology and fake news have, and could have on our world and future!

WORKSHOP #3:  The Lonsdale Project Website Workshop – Citizen Science meets Theatre-Making

Ages: 5th and 6th Class
Time: 1.5 hours (can include 10 minute snack break)

Are you curious about how theatre and science can combine to make beautiful experiments? Are you interested in flexing your creative and scientific capabilities? Do you think that science or art are not for you, but are willing to have your mind DRASTICALLY changed?

This workshop will bring young people on a journey that combines science, theatre and storytelling, inspired by the science and life of Newbridge-born Kathleen Lonsdale. The workshop will look at how you can engage personally and as a community in a fun way with science, creativity and activism.
