We warmly welcome you to a panel discussion with Visual Artist Sheena Malone and a special guest, as they explore the role of Irish folk medicine and its wider context. Inspired by her exhibition Folk Medicine, this artist talk expands on the themes present in the artworks. Looking at the historical context of folk medicine and its ongoing practice in Ireland today. The discussion will be delving into plant knowledge, magico-ritualistic practices and the idea of ‘the cure’. All are welcome to come along and share their experiences of folk medicine and cures.

Sheena will be joined by Cecily Gilligan, author of Cures of Ireland – A Treasury of Irish Folk Cures, for the panel discussion.

Cecily grew up and lives in rural County Sligo. She is a Primary school teacher, and has a degree in Social Science and a Masters in Women’s Studies from UCC. She has been interested in folklore since childhood, when much of her knowledge was acquired from within her community, and in particular from her grandmother. Cecily is a hill-walker, a sailor, a world traveller, and a strong supporter of Irish culture and language. She is also a campaigner for the protection of human rights and the environment, locally and globally.
