John O’Connell lives and works in Dublin and Kildare. He is an artist working in sculpture, drawing, film and video. He holds an MA in Fine Art from the Royal College of Art, London (2005) and a BA in Fine Art, from the National College of Art and Design (2001). He has undertaken numerous residencies and has exhibited widely in Ireland and abroad. His recent exhibitions include Futures, Royal Hibernian Academy, Dublin, The Heart is a Lonely Hunter, Berlin, Nothing Matters When Your Dancing, Lowen Palais, Berlin and Big Pink, Solo Show, Goethe Institute, Dublin.
John’s work involves an interest in cycles of time, the study of cosmology and curves into unknown worlds of dreams, fantasy and the supernatural. He is developing processes that employ the combination of sculptural assemblages with complex movable constructions to ‘reproduce’ landscape.
Through the camera lens these become the stage to inhabit another world. Loose narratives form between the imagination and an intuitive play with the found and broken. The end result becomes projected films, site-specific installation and drawing.
