Potiche
Catherine Deneuve stars in Francois Ozon's stage adaptation, a hilarious French comedy of deliberate naffness. It is a period pastiche executed with brilliant attention to detail and a weird, suppressed passion. There is, however, more than enough here to generate comedy, satire and shrewd comment on what might be going on in the collective mind of Sarkozy's France.
Suzanne (Deneuve) is the submissive, housebound wife of wealthy industrialist, who oversees his umbrella factory with an iron fist and is equally tyrannical with his children and “trophy wife” – “potiche”. When the workers go on strike and take Robert hostage, Suzanne steps in to manage the factory. To everyone’s surprise, she proves herself a competent and assertive woman of action.
Catherine Deneuve leads a blue-chip cast in this screwball comedy which is arch, knowing and self-aware.
